An industry first study into condenser technology has recently been conducted by Foster Refrigerator. Standout results of the test comparing a unit with a +stayclear condenser and a unit with a traditional fin condenser were as follows:
- 35.8% lower energy consumption when 12 months old – reducing long term direct operating costs
- 28.6% lower compressor run time when 12 months old – increasing the operating life of the refrigeration system
- Only a 16.3% reduction in airflow over 12 months on the cabinet fitted with +stayclear, compared to a reduction of 94.7% with the fin condenser
- Significantly reduce maintenance costs and customer site disruption
- Improve equipment longevity Reduce cleaning requirements
- Improve Food Safety: a clear condenser means more accurate and reliable temperature control

Leading professional refrigeration specialist, Foster Refrigerator, has revealed its latest energy-saving innovation, a new condenser design that substantially extends the period of efficient cabinet operation between cleaning cycles, driving significant savings in both maintenance costs and energy consumption.
Exclusive to Foster, the +stayclear condenser has been developed to combat costly maintenance associated with traditional condenser blockages, reducing operator down-time and prolonging the lifetime of the equipment, keeping your fridge working more efficiently for longer.
Traditional condensers attract dust and grease, and require regular maintenance by trained engineers. Such blockages if left un-checked can result in poor temperature control and ultimately product failure leading to kitchen disruption and health and safety concerns. The condenser technology study found that the unit fitted with +stayclear maintained 83.7% clear airflow after 12 months, compared to only 5.3% clear airflow on a traditional fin condenser.
Find out how +stayclear works.
The new +stayclear is different from traditional condensers. It features a unique aerofoil tube design to achieve high heat transfer without the potential for blockage and efficiency loss commonly associated with the traditional “car radiator” style condensers.
This continuous airflow means there is far less chance that maintenance-intensive debris such as grease and dust can build up in the condenser unit. Debris can lead to inefficiencies in temperature control, causing the unit to use more energy, just to maintain safe food temperatures.
What is more, too much grease and debris caught around the condenser unit will require specialist often expensive and labour intensive cleaning.
Chris Playford Market and Development Director at Foster, said: “the incentive to develop the +stayclear came from a need to provide products that require less maintenance, achieve high levels of energy efficiency that is maintained during the life of the equipment, not only for a new certification test, and part of its company-wide drive to reduce the environmental impact of refrigeration as a whole, to aid sustainability.
Cleaning a condenser is an intrusive job and which involves machine down-time, and a lot of disruption to a busy working kitchen. “We designed the +stayclear system to answer a real industry-wide problem of machine maintenance.”
Playford said: “Fundamentally the +stayclear helps to create sustained energy efficiencies for the entire refrigerator, meaning its working life is extended.
“As a traditional condenser blocks it uses more energy no matter how energy efficient the refrigerator is, and this is a real problem for professional equipment which cannot afford downtime and is a big cost investment.
“With +stayclear the blockages just do not happen, so the lifetime of the refrigerator is increased, and its energy efficiency in everyday use is improved.”
Foster is the only commercial refrigerator manufacturer with this technology, which is currently available to be fitted to the most popular G2 cabinets.
