Foster and Gamko explore the business case for sustainable refrigeration at The Caterer Sustainability Summit

There was plenty to discuss at The Caterer Sustainability Summit on Tuesday 8 September 2026, as hospitality businesses came together to share the sustainability challenges they’re facing and the practical initiatives they’re putting in place to meet their green targets.

Foster and Gamko were proud to sponsor the event, held at The Line in London, where our team enjoyed networking with new people, catching up with familiar faces and hearing from businesses taking a practical approach to sustainability.

One key message came through from the day: sustainability needs to make sense for the business as well as the planet.

The business case for energy-efficient refrigeration

As well as sponsoring the event, our very own Project Business Manager and Sustainability Expert, Lewis Bruce, was one of the faces presenting on the main stage.

His talk explored the role refrigeration can play in reducing energy consumption and, importantly, operating costs.

Refrigeration operates around the clock, meaning even relatively small improvements in efficiency can add up significantly over the lifetime of a unit. Choosing equipment based purely on its initial purchase price can therefore be a false economy, with more energy-efficient equipment offering the potential for significant long-term savings.

"The biggest sustainability win isn’t always changing how a piece of equipment is used. It’s choosing the right piece of equipment in the first place."

The bigger picture on equipment cost

Lewis demonstrated this using our EcoShow multideck. Following an innovative redesign, energy consumption has been reduced by 80%, taking the estimated annual energy cost from £2,211.90 to £488.40.

Over a 10-year period, this could deliver:

• £17,235 in potential energy cost savings
• 57,450 kWh less energy use
• 1 tonnes less CO₂e

The figures demonstrate how looking beyond the initial purchase price of refrigeration equipment can help hospitality businesses reduce both their environmental impact and their long-term operating costs.

Keeping refrigeration running efficiently

Lewis also looked at what happens when refrigeration equipment can’t operate as efficiently as it should.

A blocked condenser coil is one of the biggest causes of reduced refrigeration efficiency, as the equipment must work harder to maintain the required temperature.

Our +StayClear condenser is designed to help tackle this problem, consuming 35% less energy and reducing compressor run time by 29%.

"As The Refrigeration Experts, we are committed to building a more responsible future for foodservice, and sustainability is one of our defining current challenges.

We’re keen to help how the sector addresses this complex and important issue by delivering practical, energy-efficient solutions to help operators reduce their impact while building resilient, future-proof businesses."

The response to Lewis’ session was particularly encouraging, with many attendees at The Caterer Sustainability Summit taking up his offer of a free energy audit.

If you’d like to understand how efficiently your refrigeration equipment is operating and identify opportunities to reduce energy costs, you can arrange your own free energy audit below.

Where is your energy going?

An Energy Audit can help you understand how your refrigeration is performing, identify opportunities to improve efficiency and see where savings could be more.

We’d like to thank The Caterer for organising a brilliant event and everyone who joined for Lewis’ session.

We were delighted to sponsor the Sustainability Summit and contribute to a conversation that is becoming increasingly relevant to the way hospitality businesses operate.
