The upward trend for versatile catering options in Garden Centres means customer expectations for garden centre catering are growing.

Garden Centre spaces offer a unique catering opportunity, with cafés and catering outlets often situated within open-plan retail areas, giving customers chance to relax during their visit.

When garden centre catering consultants, Horticatering, were given the brief to design the new café area at Wakefield’s Horitcentre site, getting the refrigeration needs right was top of the agenda. In this project, getting the coffee shop design right and making food highly visible whilst being served at the correct temperature, was key.

HortiCentre, New Road, Overton, Wakefield

Based within the extremely busy and popular Horticentre garden centre in Wakefield, Seedroom is a new coffee shop and bistro built on traditional Yorkshire values of delicious food and drink served in a homely environment at fair prices. Its menu is extensive with family favourites and more unusual foods - both hot and cold meals - served alongside top quality barista style coffee. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and a children’s menu are offered every day, along with a range of sweet treats including cakes, scones and tray bakes. Seedroom also fully caters for coeliacs and vegetarians with a list of daily specials.

For consultants Horticatering, the re-design of this popular café was always about creating a light, open space to offer customers the space to relax, and add to their retail experience. Seedroom is designed with a single length of serving counter yet its food range demands a combination of self-service and assisted service refrigerators, all of which seamlessly blend together to create a single counter– a design not commonly found in display chillers.

Foster’s new Display Chiller Range fit this bill perfectly, available in both open and closed fronted models. Horticatering suggested the new

Foster Display Chiller, owing to the range’s capability to be housed side-by-side no matter if closed fronted display or open-fronted “grab and go” models were selected. All manufactured in the UK, Foster Display Chillers have been designed with the customer in mind.

Nick Bamber, Head of Marketing at Foster Refrigerator said: “Retail environments demand food displays which not only achieve incredibly high standards of reliable refrigeration, but which also have the right aesthetics and the right levels of convenience and practicality.

“It is about displaying food well, whilst ensuring it tastes fresh. The Foster Display Chiller will help our customers increase sales potential and enhance end-users’ reputations as high-quality food retailers.

Foster products are designed to these exacting standards, meaning customers can buy with total confidence knowing that their purchase is highquality and robust, with all the energy-efficiency demanded from a technologically advanced refrigeration product” he added.
